God’s rescue operation and new creation

Lord, we dream about justice.
We glimpse for a moment, 
    a world at one, a world put to rights, a world where things work out, 
    where societies function fairly and efficiently,
    where we not only know what we ought to do but actually do it.
And then we wake up and come back to reality.
 
…from the very beginning, two thousand years ago,
we the followers of Jesus have always maintained that
 
You took the tears of the world and made them Your own,
    carrying them all the way to Your cruel and unjust death
    to carry out God’s rescue operation,
and that You took the joy of the world and brought it to new birth
    as You rose from the dead and thereby launched God’s new creation.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: 
The old has gone, the new is here!  
All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ 
and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 
    that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, 
    not counting people’s sins against them. 
And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
 

Jesus, fight for me against Satan

Lord Jehovah,
judge my cause and fight for me against Satan and his host.
Lay the strong one low!
 
I have cast off his yoke, and renounced his cursed power.
He doubly hates this, and longs to seize me as his prey.
 
I flee to you and to your cross for help.
He would win if you did not deliver me – but you have already defeated him.
 
Do not let him conquer me! Put him to shame, O Lord my God! 
Give me victory!
 
It is not strength that wins; my weakness is my shield.
In lowly trust we fight the fight, and weakness wins the battle.
 
So give me a lowly heart, and cast away each prideful thought.
Let gentleness and love come in instead, and abide in my life.
 
Your will, not mine, be done. I resist my selfish desires.
Let me ever and always be your servant only.
 
Jesus, I flee to you. I cling to your cross.
Save me from Satan’s hellish power and pluck me from his grasp.
 
So I will praise you, Lord, and adore your great name.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. 
Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 
Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering 
   are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, 
    who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, 
    will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

prayer for bleary-eyed parents

O Lord, you who hold all things together, 
    help me. I pray, not to lose my mind; 
you who calmed the tempest,
    help me not to lose my temper;
you who promised rest to the weary,
    speak a word of peace to my tired body;
you who healed the blind,
    open my eyes to see your presence in the dark;
you who speak things into life,
    help me to hear your small voice over the din of my own noisy mind;
you who welcomed the children,
    take care of my own;
and you who promised to be with us always,
    be with me now in my hour of need,
    so that I may feel your tangible care.

Psalm of the Razor’s Edge

The path we walk to you, O God, is narrow,
    as narrow as a razor’s edge.
The Way is only as wide as a human hair,
    and many are those who lose their balance.
    on such a thin and uncertain edge.
Each day, like a circus aerialist,
    I walk the tightrope of the command,
    “Come, follow me.”
Who can stride safely on such a narrow bridge,
    which swings between heaven and earth?
Downward is the pull of self;
    it tugs at me: “for me, for me… me.”
Heavy the gravity of the urge:
    “I want, I want, I want.”
The Way is narrow and high:
    holy and brave are those
    who climb upon the razor’s edge,
    swaying from the left to the right or right to left,
    straining too hard or relaxing too much.
Holy are those who fall
    but rise again
    and climb back upon the narrow edge
    and begin again and again.
The Way is narrow and high,
    and high are those who walk it,
    one small step at a time,
    intoxicated by risk,
    joyous at the fine balancing line
    of the razor’s edge.

on the day of my distress

O Lord, I cry out to you on the day of my distress.
It is a day that is full of challenges and limitations.
On this day, I discover that I cannot handle all of my problems.
My resources and experience are not enough.  I have tried.
I decided to change things, but I did not prevail.
I truly need a saviour.  

There is no saviour better than you.
You are the greatest and most compassionate saviour.
Therefore, I will not invest my efforts and energy
    in recruiting the resources that people use to address their problems.
Instead, I will start with something unique and come to you.
Some trust in guns and tanks, but we trust in the name of the Lord.
In my distress, my life will be different;
    my thoughts, feelings, and decisions will be different;
    for I shall come to you and trust in you.
I shall trust from the bottom of my heart that the outcome with you is very different.

You alone are God and we are the children of the blessing.
Our King is not deaf or harsh or impotent.
I thank you because you have entered into the day of distress
    and turned it into a day of supplication.
You have blessed me in the midst of my distress
    and consequently my inner soul has recognized that you are trustworthy.
I surrender my life into the hands of the one who can calm waves and dry tears.

    may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

May we shout for joy over your victory

We praise and thank you
    glorious Lord Jesus Christ,
    for being present among us and in us.
In us you praise the Father
    with the voice of the Spirit,
    whom you have given us.
Lord, may this voice of the Spirit
    be roused in us
    as we listen to the words of Scripture
    in a manner that is worthy and fitting,
    appropriate to the meaning of the text and
    in harmony with what is revealed to us.
Make us ready to recognize
    how we can correspond
    to the teaching and example proposed to us.
For you are God, living and reigning
    for ever and ever. Amen.

may the Holy Spirit work in the Church today

Heavenly Father, in the mighty name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
    we want to thank you for the Church which is your own creation.
We want to thank you for the way you have enabled your servants,
    by the power of the Holy Spirit, 
    to propagate your Gospel throughout the world.
We thank you for the zeal that you implanted 
    in the hearts of those early missionaries
    who brought the good news to foreign lands like Africa.
It is our prayer, Almighty God, 
    that the power of the Holy Spirit may work in the Church today, 
    that the hearts of the people may grow from strength to strength,
    that they may be able to withstand the obstacles that come their way
    in their endeavors to make your word reach all corners of the world.
Revitalize your Church and let your presence 
    be with all who are called by your holy Name.
Help each of us to live according to your will 
    so that your glory may be found in your Church.
Let everyone in the Church have zeal to exalt your Name.

Come Holy Spirit

Come, oh come, most gracious comforter of afflicted souls
    and helper in tribulations.
Come, cleanser of sins and healer of wounds.
Come, strengthener of the weak,
    comforter of the downtrodden.
Come, teacher of the humble
    and destroyer of the proud.
Come, devoted father of the orphan,
    gentle protector of widows.
Come, hope of the poor, reviver of the sick.
Come, stay of the navigator,
    post of refuge for the shipwrecked.
Come, singular glory of those who live,
    singular salvation of those who die.
 
Come, most Holy Spirit, come,
    and have mercy on me.
Make me fit for you.

shepherd to the shepherds, help us

God of peace, 
    who has restored us to each other, 
    and made the two one:
  You who set kings upon thrones, 
    who raise the poor out of the dust, 
    and lift up the beggar from the dung hill.
  You who chose David and took him away from the sheepfold,
    though he was the least and the youngest of the sons of Jesse.
  You who gave the word to those who preach the gospel
    with great power for the perfection of the gospel.
Hold me by my right hand, 
    guide me with your counsel,
    and receive me with glory.

for those suffering the anguish of inner darkness

Lord Jesus, 
as you bowed your head and died,
a great darkness covered the land.
 
We lay before you
the despair of all
who find life
without meaning or purpose,
who suffer the anguish
of inner darkness
that can only lead them 
to self-destruction and death.
 
Lord,
in your passion, you too
felt abandoned, isolated, derelict.
 
You are one
with all who suffer
pain and torment
of body and mind.
 
Be to them the light
that has never been mastered.
Pierce the darkness
which surrounds and engulfs them,
so that they may know
within themselves
acceptance, forgiveness, and peace.
 
We pray for those who,
through the suicide
of one close to them,
suffer the emptiness of loss
and the burden of untold guilt.
May they know
your gift of acceptance,
so that they may be freed
from self-reproach
and mutual recrimination,
and find in the pattern
of your dying and rising,
new understanding, and purpose
for their lives.
