Stretch forth Your hand to us

O Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior
Stretch forth Your hand to us who are tossed about in this world
as You did to Peter sinking in the sea,
and with Your strength fortify us against the devil
    who fights against us.
Feed us with Your indescribable wisdom that governs all creation.
Kind refuge for the storm-tossed, the one true course,
show us the way, and therein will we walk,
for we have offered our souls unto You.
Bestow on our foolishness Your spirit of true understanding.
Bless our every work with the breath of Your greatness,
that at all times guided and sustained by Your Holy Spirit
we may in all things accomplish Your holy and all-perfect will.

Sophrony the Athonite, 1896-1993, Russian-born Orthodox Monk who lived

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified.
“It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them:
“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
    “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out,
    “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.
“You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

beginning Lent

Loving Lord,
at the beginning of this Lenten season,
we are met with the challenge of handing over
every bit of our lives that do not come from You.
To rid ourselves of what clutters our lives,
and all that distracts us from the simple truth
of Your love for us.

Your prophets have called us to change the way we worship—
to make internal sacrifices instead of external ones.
To seek justice, and love kindness,
and walk humbly with You
each and every one of our days.

If we don’t give anything up for Lent,
then let us at least give up this:
that we might cease living in ways that disconnect us from You,
for every one of our steps is like a circle around Your temple.
Perhaps this Lent,
we can give up our way
and give ourselves to Your way for us.

So, lead and guide us on this Lenten way.
May we walk with Jesus toward the hill just outside of Jerusalem.
May we like Him take up our cross and follow,
spending each moment of our lives living responsively to You,
just as Christ Himself did.
For that is the faithful way.
Amen

Patrick Ryan, Presbyterian pastor in West Virginia.

Then he said to the crowd,
“If any of you wants to be my follower,
you must give up your own way,
    take up your cross daily,
    and follow me.
If you try to hang on to your life,
    you will lose it.
But if you give up your life for my sake,
    you will save it.

prepare the way to You

Lord Jesus Christ, listen to the voice of our distress
    in the desert of penitents crying out to you;
that we may not be deceived
by the falsehood of discussion in nobility of birth,
    from superstition of religion,
    from curiosity of knowledge tempting us;
grant us to prepare the way to you by abandoning sin,
    by the purpose of repenting,
    by the remission of wrongs,
    by contempt of temporal things,
and by the observing of the commandments.
May your paths be made straight in us
by the renunciation of our own will, feeling, self-confidence,
    by the spending over and above of deliberations;
that in the house of Bethany of obedience
baptized with the water of true contrition,
with the Holy Spirit and with fire across Jordan,
and after the river of the last judgment
we may perfectly know you,
the Mediator of virtue and knowledge,
the Mediator of God and men.

St. Albert the Great, 1206-1280, German Dominican

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord,
so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith,
just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit,
according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world,
    and not according to Christ.
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
and you have been filled in him,
who is the head of all rule and authority.
