Your kingdom come, here and in heaven

Thy kingdom come, Lord!
Raise, Lord; enlarge, Lord; establish your kingdom!
Yours is the glory.
And unless you want your glory confined only to heaven,
   or account the praises and eternal hallelujahs of saints and angels
       enough adoration for your great name, Lord,
   have regard to this poor decaying kingdom.
For only in it, and in heaven is your glory celebrated.

And if you leave this kingdom to be overrun
    by the agents and ministers of the devil,
  or if idolatry and the profane gain ground here
    so as to push you off your throne,
        would that not be giving your glory to another –
        which you have promised not to do?

Lord, you are still the same God.
Your essence is eternal.
Your attributes will never change.
Your power, wisdom, and mercy are the same as ever.
So in your mercy, grant us the same favor.
Amen.

The thought of my suffering and homelessness

I will never forget this awful time,
    as I grieve over my loss.
Yet I still dare to hope
    when I remember this:

The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
    His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness;
    his mercies begin afresh each morning.
I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance;
    therefore, I will hope in him!”

you have forgiven me such great sins

What return shall I make to the Lord
    for my ability to recall these things with no fear in my soul?
I will love you, Lord, and thank you, and praise your name,
    because you have forgiven me such great sins and such wicked deeds.
I acknowledge that it was by your grace and mercy
    that you melted away my sins like ice.
I acknowledge, too, that by your grace
    I was preserved from whatever sins I did not commit,
    for there was no knowing what I might have done,
    since I loved evil even if it served no purpose.
I avow that you have forgiven me all,
    both the sins which I committed of my own accord
    and those which by your guidance I was spared from committing.

What man who reflects upon his own weakness
    can dare to claim that his own efforts have made him chaste and free from sin,
    as though this entitled him to love you the less,
    on the ground that he had less need of the mercy
    by which you forgive the sins of the penitent?
There are some who have been called by you
    and because they have listened to your voice
    they have avoided the sins which I here record and confess for them to read.
But let them not deride me for having been cured by the same Doctor
    who preserved them from sickness,
    or at least from such grave sickness as mine.
Let them love you just as much, or even more, than I do,
    for they can see that the same healing hand
        which rid me of the great fever of my sins
        protects them from falling sick of the same disease.

I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
    he heard my cry for mercy.
Because he turned his ear to me,
    I will call on him as long as I live.

The cords of death entangled me,
    the anguish of the grave came over me;
    I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
Then I called on the name of the Lord:
    “Lord, save me!”

The Lord is gracious and righteous;
    our God is full of compassion.
The Lord protects the unwary;
    when I was brought low, he saved me.

Return to your rest, my soul,
    for the Lord has been good to you.

For you, Lord, have delivered me from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    my feet from stumbling,
 that I may walk before the Lord
    in the land of the living.

make us relevant to those in need

Supper at Emmaus, by Peter Paul Rubens via Wikimedia Commons

God of life
God of justice
God of love and mercy

God the provider
God our refuge and sustainer
God our comforter

Hear the plight of those living in squalid conditions
We present the vulnerabilities of the widows,
orphans, sick, the aged, and unemployed
We present their needs before you
We appeal to you to meet them at their point of need

Give them hope and faith in you
Give them courage to soldier on
Give them resilience and tenacity

We pray that while the powers that
have tended to ignore their plight
you will be the eyes and ears that see and listen
to their heartfelt needs

We pray that you make us the instrument
and the channel of healing and source of comfort;
We appear to you to make us relevant and effective
to those in need.
Amen.

Separate us from forgiven sins

image, Steve  F, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Father, when You forgive sins,
You separate them as far from us as the east is from the west

Bury them in the bottom of the deepest sea
and put up a sign for the devil that says,
NO FISHING.

a prayer for freedom

image by Zulmaury Saavedra via unsplash

Dear God,

I used to think that freedom meant I could do anything
    or have anything I wanted.
That just made me a slave to my own desires.
Soon I found myself trapped
    in destructive habits, hurtful relationships and even powerful addictions.
That is not freedom. That’s bondage.

When I learned about Jesus, I saw the truth:
I am a needy person who needs a merciful God.
Only you provide what I’m looking for.
Only you can provide that path to freedom.
Thank you for teaching me that freedom is found
    in living a life consistent with truth,
    in a way that keeps my heart, mind, body, and soul all free.
True freedom comes when the reality of your holiness
    overpowers my sinful inclinations
    and fills my life with the fullness of your liberating love.

our feeble reality

image by Ray ZHUANG via Unsplash

Lord God, the strongest and brightest of us
    are as fragile as a floating bubble,
    unsteady as a newborn kitten on a waxed kitchen floor.
If we keep our footing in the shaky space
    between our arrival and departure from this world
  we owe our survival – not to mention our success – to many other people
    who held us up and helped us crawl or fly or muck our way through
    and to You, God, who keeps breathing life into our lungs
        the way a child keeps puffing air into a leaking balloon.
    We take our every step in the energy of mercy . . .
    We see each flower, taste each drop of water,
        sense the presence of each person around us,
            through your gift of consciousness.
For all this may we be grateful.

patient, kind & compassionate Lord

Do you roll your eyes in frustration, Lord,
   when I pay no attention to you, to your truth,
      – not even to common sense?

Do you want to dope slap me, Lord,
   when I miss the better, right choice to make
     – staring me right in the face?

Do you ever turn and walk away
   when I, for the thousandth time,
      make the same foolish, stupid mistake?

No, Lord, you don’t…

Instead,
   you show me time and again
      the things I’ve failed to see,
   you look with compassion and mercy
      on me and all my folly,
   you always, freely, pardon my sins
      and grant me a new beginning…
Patient, kind and compassionate Lord,
   be gracious to me today – as you always are –
      and help me grow in your grace…

Amen.

Their hearts were not loyal to him.
    They did not keep his covenant.
Yet he was merciful and forgave their sins

Many times he held back his anger

For he remembered that they were merely mortal,

Have mercy on my darkness, my ashes

photo by Elvis Bekmanis on Unsplash

Lord, have mercy.
Have mercy on my darkness, my weakness, my confusion.
Have mercy on my infidelity, my cowardice, my turning about in circles,
    my wandering, my evasions.
I do not ask anything but such mercy, always, in everything, mercy.
My life here at Gethsemani – a little solidity and very much ashes.

Almost everything is ashes.
What I have prized most is ashes.
What I have attended to least is, perhaps, a little solid.

Lord have mercy.
Guide me, make me want again to be holy,
    to be a man of God even though in desperateness and confusion.
I do not necessarily ask for clarity, a plain way,
    but only to go according to Your love,
    to follow your mercy, to trust in Your mercy.

Thomas Merton, 1915 – 1968, American Catholic writer and Trappist monk

To you, Lord, I called;
    to the Lord I cried for mercy:
“What is gained if I am silenced,
    if I go down to the pit?
Will the dust praise you?
    Will it proclaim your faithfulness?
Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me;
    Lord, be my help.”

You turned my wailing into dancing;
    you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
    Lord my God, I will praise you forever.

have mercy and cleanse me

photo by Zeynep Yilmaz via pexels

Have mercy on me, O life-giver, through your goodness.
In your great tenderness soothe away my faults.
Cleanse me of my guilt,
    do not hold my failures against me.
For I have come to see that I fail you,
    when I have not acknowledged with my whole being
    that I am made truly in your image;
    in not walking in your ways I have sinned against you.
You are love and truth itself
    and seek sincerity of heart;
  teach me the secrets of wisdom.
Cleanse me from all that prevents me
    from listening to your word.

Ianthe Pratt, organizer of Catholic women’s activities in London

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
    blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
    and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.
Surely I was sinful at birth,
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

reveal your divine authority in Palestine

O rulers be prudent, O judges be disciplined.
Lord, many enemies desire to terminate the people of God in the Middle East.
They throw bombs at churches and blast our holy sites.
Their leaders are like Cain, Ahab, and Herod
    because they unhesitatingly seek to kill their brothers and sisters.

Mercy has become extinct, and there is no compassion in their hearts.
    They destroy unity and make smiling illegal.
    All the refugees and the weak ones are crying out.
O Lord, your helpless boys and abandoned girls are suffering.
    They have been slaughtered like sheep.
Didn’t you promise to build your church?
Why don’t you listen?

Palestine, Syria, Egypt and the Arab world are crying out to you.
Please take away this cup.
Speak to the kings and make them reconsider.
Convince them to fear your anger and stop exterminating your people.

O Lord, give us great leaders.
Where is the wise Solomon? Where is David, the man after your own heart?
Where are Cyrus and Daniel who spread justice and peace?
O Lord, declare your holy anger against evil systems
    that champion murder and defilement.

Have mercy on sinners but eradicate evil systems.
Deliver sinners but destroy oppressive systems.
Please annihilate slavery, bigotry, colonialism, neo-colonialism,
    Nazism and dictatorships!
Please destroy every system that is rooted in sin.

Why don’t you reveal your divine authority
    and destroy wickedness in every evil system?
May your people everywhere be able to live lives of quietness and tranquility?
You are the best judge!

Yohanna Katanacho, 1967 – , Palestinian Israeli evangelical theologian

Why do the nations conspire
    and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth rise up
    and the rulers band together
    against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,
“Let us break their chains
    and throw off their shackles.”

The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
    the Lord scoffs at them.
He rebukes them in his anger
    and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
“I have installed my king
    on Zion, my holy mountain.”

I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:

He said to me, “You are my son;
    today I have become your father.
Ask me,
    and I will make the nations your inheritance,
    the ends of the earth your possession.
You will break them with a rod of iron;
    you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”

Therefore, you kings, be wise;
    be warned, you rulers of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear
    and celebrate his rule with trembling.
Kiss his son, or he will be angry
    and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
    Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
