God of Love and Justice,

We know that you stand against the injury and impairment of your people.  There is no injustice that you excuse, no mischief that you condone.  You are the Defender of the defenseless, the Vindicator of the innocent.  You do not hold weakness or youth against your people.  You love them.  You want happy lives for your children.  Therefore, you do not favor those who use their strength to harm others.  Your wrath is kindled against violence.  You oppose purveyors of agony and anguish.

God, we ask that you surround those who know the pain of abuse with the helping touch of your hands.  May they come to know that you are the God that is righteous, just and fair.  Give to these, your mistreated children, the joy of your resurrection promise, the promise that they shall soon conquer the distress that has unfairly beset them.  Let them experience the exhilarating presence of your triumphant spirit.  Give to them the marvelous assurance that they shall inherit your shalom, live in harmony and indeed experience joy.
In the name of Jesus we pray and by the power of the Spirit we dare to believe.
Amen.

Vance P. Ross,  Methodist pastor and discipleship minister

When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.  Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,
    weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,
    because they are no more.”
