slow me down, Lord

Sequoia trees via Pickpic

Give me, amid the confusion of the day,
    the calmness of the everlasting hills.
Break the tensions
    of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music
    of the singing streams that live in my memory.
Help me to know the magical,
    restoring power of sleep.
Teach me the art of taking minute vacations-
    of slowing down to look at a flower,
    to chat with a friend, to pat a dog,
    to read a few lines from a good book.
Remind me each day
    of the fable of the hare and the tortoise,
    that I may know
    that the race is not always to the swift-
    there is more to life than increasing speed.
Let me look upward
    into the branches of the towering oak and know
    that it grew slowly and well.
Slow me down, Lord, and inspire me to send
    my roots deep in the soil of life’s enduring values
    that I may grow towards the stars
    of my greater destiny.

Richard Cushing, 1895 – 1970, American Catholic Archbishop

Psalm 121:1-8

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
    From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved;
    he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper;
    the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
    nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil;
    he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
    your going out and your coming in
    from this time forth and forevermore.

Question

What is an area of your life where you need to slow down,
    or at least take some minute breaks?
What steps can you take to slow down and trust God
    to accomplish his purposes in your life?

prayer for bleary-eyed parents

Mother and Child by Julius Gari Melchers, Art Institute of Chicago

O Lord, you who hold all things together,
    help me. I pray, not to lose my mind;
you who calmed the tempest,
    help me not to lose my temper;
you who promised rest to the weary,
    speak a word of peace to my tired body;
you who healed the blind,
    open my eyes to see your presence in the dark;
you who speak things into life,
    help me to hear your small voice over the din of my own noisy mind;
you who welcomed the children,
    take care of my own;
and you who promised to be with us always,
    be with me now in my hour of need,
    so that I may feel your tangible care.
I pray this in the name of Jesus, the Compassionate One,
Amen,

W, David O. Taylor, American theologian and Anglican priest

loving Jesus, come into my soul

O most gracious and loving Jesus,
    my Lord and my God,
    fountain of all grace.
  come into my soul with the fullness of your grace.
Jesus most patient, too long have I made you wait for me,
    yet come to me:
        endure me a sinner, and make me, through your patience,
        to endure all things, and to be patient with all.
Jesus most humble, make me through your humility so humble,
    that I may never lift up myself,
    for anything against anyone, as to any one.
Jesus most loving, come with all your love into my soul,
    that I may love you with a burning love,
    and love each and everyone with your own love.

E.B. Pusey, 1800-1882, English churchman and leader of the Oxford Movement

This is how God showed his love among us:
He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us
    and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another,
    God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

only you can teach me to pray

image / Conniemod, CC BY-SA 3.0 / Wikimedia Commons

Listen, O Lord, to my prayers.
Listen to my desire to be with you, to dwell in your house,
    and to let my whole being be filled with your presence.
But none of this is possible without you.
When you are not the one who fills me,
    I am soon filled with endless thoughts and concerns
    that divide me and tear me away from you.
Even thoughts about you, good spiritual thoughts,
    can be little more than distractions,
    when you are not their author.
O Lord, thinking about you,
    being fascinated with theological ideas and discussions,
    being excited about histories of Christian spirituality
    and stimulated by thoughts and ideas about prayer and meditation,
    all of this can be as much an expression of greed
        as the unruly desire for food, possessions, or power.
Every day I see again that only you can teach me to pray,
    only you can set my heart at rest,
    only you can let me dwell in your presence.
No book, no idea, no concept or theory will ever bring me close to you
    unless you yourself are the one who lets these instruments
    become the way to you.
But, Lord, let me at least remain open to your initiative;
    let me wait patiently and attentively for that hour
    when you will come and break through
        all the walls I have erected.
Teach me, O Lord, to pray. Amen.

Henri J.M. Nouwen, 1932 – 1996, Dutch-born Catholic priest and author

unite us by your peace

Photo by Daniel Curran on Unsplash
O God of peace, unite our hearts by your bond of peace,
    that we may live with one another in gentleness and humility,
    in peace and unity.
O God of patience, give us patience in times of trial
    and steadfastness to endure to the end.
O Spirit of prayer, awaken our hearts,
    that we may lift up holy hands to God
    and cry unto him in all our distresses.
Be our defence and shade in time of need, our help in trial,
    our consolation when all things are against us.
Come, eternal light, salvation and comfort,
    be our light in darkness, salvation in life, comfort in death,
    and lead us in the straight way to everlasting life,
    that we may praise you forever, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Bernard Albrecht, 1569-1636
