Let the eternal God be the portion of my soul;
let heaven be my inheritance and hope;
let Christ be my Head and my promise of security;
let faith be my wisdom,
and love my very heart and will.

Today I look into my own heart
and all around me, and I sing the song of Mary.

My life praises the Lord my God,
  who is setting me free.
He has remembered me, in my humiliation and distress!
From now on, those who rejected and ignored me
  will see me and call me happy,
  because of the great things he is doing
  in my humble life.
His name is completely different from the other names in this world;
  from one generation to another
  he was on the side of the oppressed.
As on the day of the Exodus, he is stretching out
  his mighty arm to scatter the oppressors
  with all their evil plans.
He has brought down mighty kings
  from their thrones
  and he has lifted up the despised;
  and so he will do today.
He has filled the exploited with good things,
And sent the exploiters away with empty hands;
  and so he will do today.
His promise to our mothers and fathers remains new and fresh to this day.
Therefore the hope for liberation
  which is burning in me
  will not be extinguished.
He will remember me, here now and beyond the grave.

Waiting in the Wilderness

​Wilderness is the place of Moses,

    a place of no longer captive and not yet free,
    of letting go and learning new living.
Wilderness is the place of Elijah,
    a place of silence and loneliness,
    of awaiting the voice of God and finding clarity.
 Wilderness is the place of John,
    a place of repenting,
    of taking first steps on the path of peace.
Wilderness is the place of Jesus,
    a place of preparation,
    of getting ready for the reckless life of faith.

We thank you, God, for the wilderness.
Wilderness is our place.
As we wait for the land of promise,
    teach us the ways of new living,
    lead us to where we hear your word most clearly,
    renew us and clear out the wastelands of our lives,
    prepare us for life in the awareness of Christ’s coming
        when the desert will sing
        and the wilderness will blossom as the rose.

meet us in our wilderness

Loving God
when we stand in our own wildernesses
when we stand in the midst of our questions
when we stand surrounded by our hurts and darknesses
may we meet you
in the same place
a God not scared to meet us
in that which is liminal
shadowy
uncomfortable
and imagine a God
who dares breathe new life
in the arid moments

God
may we live in such an advent
a moment of life
a place of promise
that takes all we are
the cracks and bruises
and speaks with promise
with vision
reimagining everything we are
and says
you are renewed
you are reborn
you are alive again
 
In such a place as this
where deserts bloom
and new roadways are made
may we grow again
dare believe in something more
and live into such a way
and that we begin here
this moment
this place
this community

a birthing place
a promise place
an unconditional place
of love
in skin
and among us

May we live within that promise
forever
So be it
Amen

You who are unchangeable in love

You who are unchangeable, whom nothing changes!
You who are unchangeable in love, 
    precisely for our welfare, not submitting to any change:
  may we too will our welfare, 
    submitting ourselves to the discipline of your unchangeableness,
    so that we may in unconditional obedience find our rest 
    and remain in rest in your unchangeableness.
You are not like us;
    if we are to preserve only some degree of constancy,
    we must not permit ourselves too much to be moved,
    nor by too many things.
You on the contrary are moved and moved in infinite love, by all things.
Even that which we human beings call an insignificant trifle,
    and pass by unmoved, 
    the need of a sparrow, even this moved You;
    and what we so often scarcely notice, 
    a human sigh, this moves You, 
You who are unchangeable!
 
You who in infinite love do submit to be moved,
    may this our prayer also move You to add Your blessing,
    in order that there may be brought about such a change in us
    who pray as to bring us into conformity with Your unchangeable will,

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise 
the unchangeable character of his purpose,

Let hope be my hunch, Lord

Lord, I’m so easily weighed down
by my struggles, my burdens
and the harsh realities of daily life…

Sometimes, I think I’ll lose hope in you
    in tomorrow,
    in others,
    and in myself
so I need you to help me trust,
to help me hope
that the peace I imagine,
the peace I pray for,
the peace you promise
is stronger and greater
than any of my problems…
 
Let hope be my hunch, Lord:
    that my future’s not limited
        by my present trials;
    that the troubles of the moment
        won’t have the last word;
    that my burdens are truly
        a prelude to joy…
 
Give me hope
    in the midst of suffering, Lord:
I know that’s the path of your love,
    I know it’s the way to peace…

Help me see, Lord,
how my troubles prepare me today
    for your coming, the advent of peace,
for the gift of your presence,
    the harvest of hope,
        my hunch proved right by your grace…
 
Protect me, Lord, while I’m awake
and watch over me while I asleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace…

increase our hope in your promises

Merciful Lord, the comforter and teacher of your faithful people,
  increase in your church the desires which you have given,
  and confirm the hearts of those who hope in you
  by enabling them to understand the depth of your promises,
    that all your adopted children
    may even now behold, with eyes of faith,
    and patiently wait for,
    the light which as yet you do not openly manifest;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

December Solstice

it is solstice night
it is the death of darkness

for an age
light has been slipping away
but now
no further

it shall return

and in the hearing of the darkness
the light says:
arise
shine
for your light has come

the promise frees itself from the frost
and long nights

there is an awakening
and in the hearing of the darkness
the light says:
the people who have walked in darkness
have seen a great light

the day now
shrunken yet
is filled with hope
and begins to stretch
pushing at the edges of darkness
scraping it away
with hope of new life

and in the hearing of the darkness
the light says:
for unto you a child is born
unto you a son is given

this is a darkness greater than any night
and the light more than the day

right in the heart of the deeper, human darkness
a manger is ready
as the age of brightness returns

the advent promise
has found a place
to chase the darkness
and make room for the light

watchful for your coming

Righteous one,
to you alone
we lift our souls;
in you alone
we place our trust;
for you alone
we wait all day long.
For you are the God
of our salvation,
abounding in mercy
and steadfast love.
Help us remain alert and watchful
for the coming of your promised one—
the one who comes with power and glory,
the one drawing near
to bring our salvation.
