The Incredulity of Saint Thomas by Caravaggio
“God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob,”
not of the philosophers and scholars.
Certainty. Certainty. Emotion. Joy. Peace.
God of Jesus Christ.
“My God and your God.”
Your God shall be my God.
Forgetting the world and all things, except only God.
He can be found only by the ways taught in the Gospel.
Greatness of the human soul.
Righteous Father, the world has not known you,
but I have known you.
Joy, joy, joy, tears of joy.
I have cut myself off from him.
“They have forsaken me, the fountain of living water.”
“My God, will you forsake me?”
May I not be cut off from him forever!
“This is life eternal, that they know you,
the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ.
I have cut myself off from him, shunned him, decried him,
crucified him.
Let me never be cut off from him!
We cling to him only by ways taught in the Gospel.
Sweet and total renunciation.
Total submission to Jesus Christ and to my director,
Eternal joy in return for one day’s trial on earth.
“I will not forget your Word.”
Blaise Pascal, 1623-1662, French mathematician and scientist

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them.
Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said,
“Peace be with you!”
Then he said to Thomas,
“Put your finger here; see my hands.
Reach out your hand and put it into my side.
Stop doubting and believe.”
Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
