O God, enlarge within us the sense of fellowship with all living things,
our brothers the animals to whom you gave the earth
as their common home with us.
We remember with shame that in the past we have exercised
the high dominion of man with ruthless cruelty
so that the voice of the earth, which should have gone up to you in song,
has been a groan of travail.
May we realize that creation does not live for us alone
but for itself and for you, and that they love the sweetness of life.
Basil the Great, c.330-379, Monastic leader and Nicene theologian

And God blessed them. And God said to them,
“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
This prayer shows a deep theology of creation care and our role in carrying out God’s design for us. Thankfully, all will be restored in his Kingdom.
