the birth

When waves of pain contort Mary’s body
her face is cramped and pale
Her eyes scuttle apart like crabs
The waves pull, recede again

and attack more violently
She clings to the wagon wheel,
grits her teeth, and her screams
terrify the beasts in the stable

Joseph, pacing nervously,
stumbles and falls
At last, seated, he strokes her back,
grasps her hand; his strength flows into her

Then a tremendous power moves within Mary
Like the sun emerging from a mountain ravine
the infant’s head appears slowly, deliberately
Joseph grips it in both hands

Now the baby’s cry flies out, rends the night
Joseph’s doubts dissolve
On the straw bed
Mary peacefully shuts her eyes

prepare us to receive your gift

Adoration of the Shepherds / Gerard van Honthorst / Wikimedia

Lord, may you now let us this year once more approach the light, celebration, and joy of Christmas Day that brings us face to face with the greatest thing there is: your love, with which you so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that all of us may believe in him and therefore not be lost, but may have eternal life.

What could we possibly bring and give to you? So much darkness in our human relationships and in our own hearts! So many confused thoughts, so much coldness and defiance, so much carelessness and hatred! So much over which you cannot rejoice, that separates us from one another and certainly cannot help us! So much that runs directly against the message of Christmas!

What should you possibly do with such gifts? And what are you to do with such people as we all are? But all of this is precisely what you want to receive from us and take from us at Christmas – the whole pile of rubbish and ourselves, just as we are – in order to give us in return Jesus, our Savior, and in him a new heaven and a new earth, new hearts and a new desire, new clarity and a new hope for us and for all people.

Be among us once again, on this final Sunday before the celebration, as we together prepare to receive him as your gift!  Make it so that we may rightly speak, hear, and pray, in proper, thankful amazement about everything that you have in mind for all of us, that you have already decided regarding all of us, and that you have already done for all of us! Amen

bring healing in thy wings

image by Sharon Tate Soberon / flickr / CC BY-ND 2.0

Lord Jesus Christ,
Thou Son of the Most High, Prince of Peace,
    be born into our world.
Wherever there is war in this world,
    wherever there is pain,
    wherever there is loneliness,
    wherever there is no hope,
come, thou long-expected one,
    with healing in thy wings.

Holy Child,
whom the shepherds and the kings and the dumb beasts adored,
    be born again.
Wherever there is boredom,
wherever there is fear of failure,
wherever there is temptation too strong to resist,
wherever there is bitterness of heart,
come, though blessed one,
    with healing in thy wings.

Frederick Buechner, 1926 – , American writer and theologian

“I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness;

I will give you as a covenant for the people,
    a light for the nations,

to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,

waiting for us

Photo by Jack Bassingthwaighte on Unsplash

Silent Word, Creative Act, Hidden Truth, Revealed Love:
We wait for you.
To be precise, we are impatient for you to come and set things right.
We are insecure with our world,
fearful of crime and disease in the streets,
    and anxious about ourselves.
We refuse your guidance, but we often wish you would act
    according to our plans.
We seldom pause to consider that you are waiting for us;
    for some genuine act of contrition;
    waiting for us to repent and change;
waiting for us to listen and respond
with a burning passion to your truth, your justice, and your mercy.
Furnish us with humble hearts and willing spirits to receive you
as you come to us through all the experiences of our lives.
Amen.

Let hope be my hunch, Lord

 Rubem Alves
Lord, I’m so easily weighed down
by my struggles, my burdens
and the harsh realities of daily life…

Sometimes, I think I’ll lose hope in you
    in tomorrow,
    in others,
    and in myself
so I need you to help me trust,
to help me hope
that the peace I imagine,
the peace I pray for,
the peace you promise
is stronger and greater
than any of my problems…

Let hope be my hunch, Lord:
    that my future’s not limited
        by my present trials;
that the troubles of the moment
        won’t have the last word;
    that my burdens are truly
        a prelude to joy…

Give me hope
in the midst of suffering, Lord:
I know that’s the path of your love,
    I know it’s the way to peace…

Help me see, Lord,
how my troubles prepare me today
for your coming, the advent of peace,
for the gift of your presence,
    the harvest of hope,
my hunch proved right by your grace…

Protect me, Lord, while I’m awake
and watch over me while I asleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace…
Amen.

humble thankfulness

Photo by Kate Remmer on Unsplash

We thank you, Lord God and Father, Creator of heaven and earth,
for all your good gifts which we, O Father of lights,
have received from you, and receive daily from your generous hand
you who have clothed our bodies with the needed covering
and satisfied them with the natural bread
through Jesus Christ, your dearly beloved Son, our Lord,
We humbly pray, dear beloved Father, that you would look upon us, your children,
persecuted for the sake of your holy Gospel,
and earnestly desiring in our weakness to live devoutly in this world.
Be pleased to keep us in your Word, in fatherly fashion,
in order that to the end of our days we may remain constant in your Gospel,
revealed by you to the plain and simple
and hidden to the wise ones in this world.

Thank You for the trials

Photo by Dorothy Lin on Unsplash

Lord, I do not see many people who are happy.
I see more people who are vexed by troubles
and overcome with anguish at their difficulties. . . .
Sometimes, I too am derailed by trials. . . .
I am tempted to see trials as only negative
    because I like to think that I’m in control. . . .
I am tempted to see trials as negative
because I tend to think that this life matters most. . . .
Remind me that there is a limit to my perspective and wisdom. . . .
I do not see all there is to see.
Remind me that Jesus suffered and He was completely innocent. . . .
If He suffered, I too may experience suffering.
Remind me that this world is temporary. . . .
I will not be satisfied in this life.
So I thank You today for the trials You have allowed in my life. . . .
I thank You for being my fortress and strength. . . .
and for giving me perseverance. . . .
Thank You for what these trials are doing in me –
    developing maturity and completeness.
Amen.

Eye of God, look not away

Photo by Timothy Eberly on Unsplash

All-Seeing One,
above me, around me, within me,
Be my seeing as I read these sacred words.
Look down upon me
Look out from within me
Look all around me
See through my eyes
Hear through my ears
Feel through my heart
Touch me where I need to be touched;
and when my heart is touched,
give me the grace to lay down this Holy Book
    and ask significant questions:
Why has my heart been touched?
How am I to be changed through this touch?
All-Seeing One,
I need to change
I need to look a little more like You
May these sacred words change and transform me.
Then I can meet You face to face
    without dying
    because I’ve finally died enough.
To die is to be healed a little more each death,
    until that final death
    when I’ll be healed forever.
It will be a healing that will last.
Your Words are healing
although they bring about my death.

Macrina Wiederkehr, 1939-2020, Benedictine sister and spiritual director
