O Holy God of Promise, we so often place our trust in the things we can see, and touch, and easily believe. But you did not ask us to believe what is easy, you have asked us to believe what is true! Forgive us, Holy One, when we doubt the ways you work. Forgive us when we find it hard to believe an ancient story. Forgive us when we question how you chose to enter the world, born as one of us. Forgive our lack of faith and belief in ways which seem so impossible to believe. Help us to look in faith, open our belief, and set aside our doubts that you sent your Son, born of a virgin – the one who has come to set us all free. We offer these prayers in the name of your Son, Emmanuel, God with us. Amen.
O Lord, I cry out to you on the day of my distress. It is a day that is full of challenges and limitations. On this day, I discover that I cannot handle all of my problems. My resources and experience are not enough. I have tried. I decided to change things, but I did not prevail. I truly need a saviour.
There is no saviour better than you. You are the greatest and most compassionate saviour. Therefore, I will not invest my efforts and energy in recruiting the resources that people use to address their problems. Instead, I will start with something unique and come to you. Some trust in guns and tanks, but we trust in the name of the Lord. In my distress, my life will be different; my thoughts, feelings, and decisions will be different; for I shall come to you and trust in you. I shall trust from the bottom of my heart that the outcome with you is very different.
You alone are God and we are the children of the blessing. Our King is not deaf or harsh or impotent. I thank you because you have entered into the day of distress and turned it into a day of supplication. You have blessed me in the midst of my distress and consequently my inner soul has recognized that you are trustworthy. I surrender my life into the hands of the one who can calm waves and dry tears.
May the Lord answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you. May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion. May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings. May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed. May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the Lord grant all your requests.
Now this I know: The Lord gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. Lord, give victory to the king! Answer us when we call!
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.
Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might to you, Lord Jesus.
You rule this world with love and grace.
There are days when we have a hard time seeing it but you have promised that you are moving all creation toward that time when God will get what God wants — a creation where peace and goodness and compassion shape all of life.
And you give us good work to do in the time that is ours: prayer and praise and hope and truth.
We are not always sure how what we do is serving your holy purposes but we submit our lives to you. We trust you, our crucified and risen Lord, to take what we offer and transform it so that it glorifies you. Amen
