Lord God of Heaven,
you are great and we stand in awe of you.
You faithfully keep your new covenant with those people
who trust in you and in Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
Look down on us, Lord, and hear our prayers
as we pray for your Church here in this nation.
We confess that we, your people, have sinned.
We and all the people of this nation have gone away from you
and your Gospel, the Good News about Jesus Christ.
Remember now what you have done in him
and not what we deserve.
We ask this in his name and for your honour and glory.

The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai:
“Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it,
because its wickedness has come up before me.”
But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish.
He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port.
After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.
