friends and the friendless

We pray for our friends,
   that they may lead happy and useful lives;
We pray for any friends
   with whom we have quarreled,
   that we may have the chance to be reconciled;
We pray for those who are living in new surroundings
   and lack friends.
We pray for those who have lost their friends
   by the way they live;
We pray for those who befriend the friendless.
God our Father,
   make us true and loyal friends.
Grant that all our friends
   may be led nearer to you.

Caryl Micklem, 1925 – 2003, English minister and hymn writer

Two are better than one,
  because they have a good reward for their toil.
For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.
But woe to him who is alone
  when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
Again, if two lie together, they keep warm,
  but how can one keep warm alone?
And though a man might prevail against one who is alone,
  two will withstand him —
  a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
