Adoration of the Christ Child, by Carl von Marr c. 1898 via Wikimedia Commons
We thank you, O God, through your child, Jesus Christ our Lord,
because you have enlightened us
and revealed to us the light that is incorruptable.
The day’s allotted span is over,
we have reached the beginning of the night.
We have had our fill of that daylight that you created for our pleasure.
And now that evening is come
and again we have no lack of light,
we praise your holiness and glory,
through your only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Through him the glory and power that are his
and the honor that is the Holy Spirit are also yours,
as they will be throughout the unending succession of ages.
Amen.
Hippolytus of Rome, 170-235, priest and theologian
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made that has been made.
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.
I spent some time this Advent reflecting on Christ as the Light and verses surrounding this theme. It is one of the most powerful metaphors in scripture. It culminates in Revelation 22:5- “There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.” Amen!
