O hand of God,
you are as generous as you are powerful,
and kind as you are rich.
How powerfully and richly
you pour out your gifts upon me!
O soft hand of God,
you lay your hand so softly on my soul.
Yet if you were to press the world with your hand,
all creatures would perish.
If you were to look at the world with anger,
the whole earth would quake
and the mountains crumble to pieces.
And yet you treat me so gently,
so softly,
so lovingly.
You have the power of life and death over all creatures.
And yet you put aside that power.
Instead you allow my soul to be wounded by sin,
in order to give me the joy
of being healed by your touch.
You slay in me that which should be slain;
and in this way you save me for your life.
St. John of the Cross, 1542-1591, Spanish mystic and reformer

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God
so that at the proper time he may exalt you
“If you were to look at the world with anger,
the whole earth would quake
and the mountains crumble to pieces.
And yet you treat me so gently,
so softly,
so lovingly.” Amen so lovely.
