Ecstasy of St. Gertrude by Pietro Liberi via Wikimedia Commons
My beloved Jesus Christ,
I desire to enter with you into a beloved rule
so that I may renew and remake my life in you.
Ah! Place my life in the guardianship of your Holy Spirit
so that I may keep your commandments at all times.
In dear joy make my conduct suitable to you in dear peace.
Flood my senses with the light of your love
so that you alone may teach and guide me,
and convert me within.
Sink my spirit so firmly into your Spirit
– quickly down into its ground –
that I may be truly buried in you.
And let me be so fully transported out of myself
into union with you
that nobody may know of my grave in you
except your living love alone,
on which it may place its seal.
Amen.
Gertrude the Great, 1256-1302, German Benedictine mystic
