recreate and restore

Forgive us, God,
that we have taken your creation for granted.
You have given us
the run of the land,
the pick of the crop
and we have squandered these resources;
distributed them unfairly,
vandalized their beauty,
violated their purity.

Forgive us, God,
that we have taken your kingdom for granted.
You have given us
the seeds of faith,
the fruits of the spirit,
and we have misused these resources;
displayed them rarely,
bestowed them grudgingly,
ignored them blithely.

Thank you, God,
that you are stronger than our destructiveness
and greater than our meanness,
that you give us a fresh start, a second chance.
Overwhelm us with the power of your resurrected love.
Compel us with the challenge you issue for change.
Lead us in the conquest of our own limits and restrictions.
Drive us towards a new life of justice, peace and integrity.

Restore us, O God;
    make your face shine on us,
    that we may be saved.
How long, Lord God Almighty,
    will your anger smolder
    against the prayers of your people?
You have fed them with the bread of tears;
    you have made them drink tears by the bowlful.
You have made us an object of derision to our neighbors,
    and our enemies mock us.
Restore us, God Almighty;
    make your face shine on us,
    that we may be saved.

  1. I am an avid supporter of creation care and believe the climate change issues are real and largely man-made. So the opening lines of this prayer are mine as well. I try to own my responsibility in the destruction of our planet and am slowly making headway to change that.
