drawn to faith

The poverty and imperfection of my language
do not so undermine my thoughts about you that I am reduced to silence.
Your Word is translated by your Holy Spirit,
into words in which I can proclaim your truth.
Your Wisdom is brought down to the level of my mind,
that I may offer guidance to others.
Your Virtue is expressed in the small good deeds
that you enable me to perform.

When I see your sea surging so wonderfully,
and I reflect that I cannot understand the origin of water
      or its measured movements,
I am drawn to faith – because only you could have created the sea and its waves.
When I see all the trees and flowers in the earth,
and I reflect that I cannot understand how they grow and multiply,
I am drawn to faith – because only you could have created trees and flowers.
When I look at myself,
and I reflect that I cannot understand how my mind and body work,
I am drawn to faith – because only you could have created mankind.
Ignorance of myself does not prevent me from knowing and worshipping:
on the contrary, ignorance of the mysteries of myself
and of all the things around me
tells me that I depend wholly on you to create and sustain all life.

Hilary of Poitiers, c.310-367, Bishop of Poitiers (France)

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory
    in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
